A Banana Nut Loaf and a Fairy Tale
64For the Birds...
Good morning beloved breakfastpoppers. Today is Fairy Tale Friday, Sept 2, in the year of our kingdom 2011. We must arrange to meet this morn so that I can inform you of a wonderful program that our kingdom has instituted to save the Sage Grouse. Of course we were hoping for a program that would save our kingdom, but as King Dem always tells us, something is better than nothing.
Let us prepare a Banana Nut Loaf this morning and when it is baked to perfection wrap it up and head for the Waterless Stream that sits beside the Grove of Nary a Tree. I will be awaiting your arrival with enough River Horse Lager for one and all.
Please go to your larder and procure 1 and 3/4 cups flour, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/3 cup shortening, 2 eggs, beaten, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup white sugar, 1 cup mashed bananas and chopped nuts.
Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Beat shortening until creamy. Add sugar a little at a time and beat slowly until fluffy. Add eggs and beat again. Add flour mixture, then bananas, then flour mixture, then bananas. Add nuts. Mix well and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes or until your toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool, wrap it in foil and head for our meeting place. See you soon.
Welcome, my dear friends and neighbors. I have good news and bad news and strange news. The kingdom via the Department of Agriculture is paying $112 million in tax money to farmers and ranchers in eleven Western states to restore the habitat of the Sage Grouse. If you are a farmer or a rancher residing in this part of the kingdom, I suppose the thought of receiving this money is enticing. Of course, realistically speaking, anytime the government offers something like this just bet on the fact that it will come with all kinds of strings attached. Now if you are not a farmer or a rancher and you are disturbed by this use of taxpayer money and you don't have a clue what a Sage Grouse is, I will enlighten you.
A Sage Grouse is a bird that has not been listed as either threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species law. Why? Because the kingdom says that there are just too many of these birds around to qualify for such a status.
Speaking of an endangered species, I would like to point out that we may be the most endangered species of all. With our debt soaring, our jobs disappearing and our faith in the future waning I would respectfully suggest that the government invest in the people of this kingdom in a way that benefits everyone. Eliminating government waste and corruption would probably be enough to strengthen the Social Security System and prevent our seniors from making the Endangered Species list...Think about it...POP
The Grouse fly in
The Grouse fly out
They prance and dance
And they spin sbout
Life is fine
Life is good
For a Sage Grouse that's loved
As well it should...
To my breakfastpopper family: Enjoy the long week-end and be safe. See you at the breakfast table on Tuesday for the PIP-POP Awards.

I got a little nervouse. I thought the $112 million was a worthwhile sum to save FAMOUS GROUSE. Famous Grouse is a Scotch, and I think we should do what is necessay to preserve all alcohol. But now that I know it is a bird that is not endangered, it's stupid. Well, I am off to the inn for a few shots of Famous Grouse that will be washed down with some River Horse Lager. INNKEEPER........
POP:
Sage Grouse stay where they are born. They don't nest far away. They only need sagebrush to build their nests and to eat. That's just over $1,000,000. per state, if shared equally. So that's a lot of sagebrush. Why is it that we can always do things better and at less cost than the government? Anyway, back to the Sage Grouse. Since they only eat sagebrush and insects, we should save them, but not at the cost of $112 million. By the way, have you seen their mating ritual on UTUBE? For all you males out there, the one with the best ritual gets to mate with 80% of the females.
I'm off to the bar - going to see how many have read my comment to see if you will be practicing ........ Someone, please save me a seat......
Pop
Think of the jobs that will be created; they’ll need 11 Grouse Counters; 1 each for the 11 states; 11 habitat restorers; 11 nest builders; 11 learners to fly; this is the group responsible for teaching the baby birds to fly; 11 grouse protectors and 11 music teachers to teach the entire grouse population to sing Barrack Hussein Obama Ummmmmh-Ummmmmh-Ummmmmh we thank you for saving us! All and all according to my Jethro Bodine Cipherer that’s a total of 66 new jobs at a cost of $1,696,696.69 per job. By all accounts this will be as successful a program as the rest of the Shovel Ready Projects this Regime has proposed.
Oppps I forgot the 11 new air traffic controllers that will need to be added which now down sizes our cost per job ratio to only $1,454,454.45 per job. Wow this new program sounds terrific now!
As far as the Sage Grouse not being listed as either threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species law that can be changed by the stroke of a pen. Just bring old Ralph Nader front and center; have him kneel before his Majesty King Obama the I; His Majesty will then tap him on each shoulder with his royal sword, EXLAXER ( that’s his version of Excalibur) the His Majesty will say arise sir Nader you are now Environmental Czar. The Czar Nader will declare the Grouse endangered and all farming in those 11 states will cease and desist immediately. That’s how it’s done in Obama Bizarro World!
Don’t ever laugh when a Grouse flies by
Your farm will be the next to die
They’ll put them on that fatal list
And your activity will cease and desist
Your crops will rot you’ll scream and howl
For you can’t disturb those precious foul
The Czar has spoken those words you dread
They’re now protected your farm is dead!!!!!!!
Pop, there are more of these type of deals state to state than we will ever know. Grouse is endangered around where they roam here, cuz I shoot and eat them, tasty 50
Hi Pop! Thanks again for keeping us aware and educated. Have a great weekend and I'm looking forward to the awards ceremony on Tuesday!
Morning POP...Sage metaphorical commentary and a nifty verse to follow...Loved it !!
Lets hope we all give Obama and company the bird in 2012...
See you at the tavern, Pop...I'm sitting next to Pino in hopes she will reveal the mating rituals of Scotty... Larry
And what of the plight of the brown sparrow or the black crow. This sounds like something Obama has cooked up to start up some kind of class envy argument in the bird population. If the Grouse has not been on the endangered species list, it is because the government has not paid any attention to it up to now...its troubles are just starting and I am sure it soon will make the list. WB
Pop...I tried that once for my wife...I lost my balance, cracked my head on the bed post, and sprained my back which cost me five strokes on my golf handicap...Larry
Actually, the swinging from the chandelier was my Me Tarzan, You Jane act...Ended the same way, only I last 10 strokes that time...have a great Labor Day weekend...Larry
This is why the Founding Fathers tried to write a Constitution that granted only certain powers to a limited federal government. Liberal courts have interpreted the commerce and general welfare clauses so that the feds now have virtually unlimited power over everything. And if the mandate to buy health insurance stands, their powers will be, in fact, unlimited.
I don't know what I could add to Everyone's Brilliant Comments except to say...What will they think of next...too much time on our Governments hands...too much time and NOT enough Brains!
That is truly a lot of money for the Sage Grouse. What are they really doing with the money???
Am I missing something here, bp? The Department of Agriculture is spending $112 million in tax money to farmers and ranchers in 11 Western states to restore the habitat of the Sage Grouse - which is NOT endangered nor threatened! That just does not make sense.
Oh, wait a minute, I understand. It's Obama's idea. He thinks it does.
kinda scary right? What's even scarier is the fact that most of Americas farmlands are now being used to grow POT because it fetches a much larger profit... yikes huh? we can't even feed ourselves anymore....
Maybe the powers that be want that land for something else...?
Great Hub.
Hey! - I see a Sage Grouse lighting a cigar with a $20 bill. The "boss" system is back in government.
In the end you brought up the social security system. In part, this system is broken (among myriad other reasons) because of the way in which it is administered. I'm talking entirely about the disability side of distributions here. I have come to the conclusion that most people who are on disability are NOT disabled, and I've encountered tons of people who are on it, who can do at least SOMETHING.
If you can drive you can work in transportation. If you can sit you can work in an office.
I think disability should be afforded ONLY to those who truly cannot, under any circumstance, support themselves through some form of employment. The requirements for receiving disability should be far more stringent as well.
Granted, that alone would not solve the issue with social security, but it would certainly be a helpful step in the right direction.
Springboard, I agree with you 100 %!! What gets me the most is the grossly obease who have no MEDICAL condition that causes the excess weight who are classified as "disabled". In fact they are ENABLED to remain in their unhealthy state of being by recieving SS benefits!
Pop,
P.S. Does any of this reek of Monsanto?
All I can imagine is that those millions are meant to go to the big corporate farmers, not the family farms. Here on Long Island there are career State Department employees who bought vineyards because of the tax write-offs. Just more of Washington taking care of its own, I'd bet.
I know I'm way late to the plate on this one - but the banana nut bread was calling to me...
ymmmm...
I just can't believe this! Wait - YES I CAN! We are dealing with a bunch of nuts in the Obama administration. They spend money that isn't theirs wantonly and it's absolutely disgusting. Thank you for alerting me to the grouse. Does anyone actually USE the brain they were given over there in the White House??? sigh...
Voted up - as always and across! Love, Carol
good hub...social security part very helpful
Pop,

Pop,
Maybe these farmers and ranchers should set up sage grouse hunting parties for some extra cash. Probably more profitable that farming or ranching.
