A Cajun Souffle and a National Disgrace
66Deplorable!
Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Wednesday, July 6, 2011. The children of our military personnel who attend schools on military bases are in danger. Why? Because the schools are in terrible condition and our nation isn't doing a thing about it. Before we wade into the thick of the problem let's prepare our breakfast.
Today we are making a Cajun Souffle. You will need 1/4 cup butter, 1/4 cup minced onion, 1/4 cup minced green bell pepper, 1/4 cup all -purpose flour, 1 and 1/2 cups milk, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, 6 large eggs, divided, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar, 2 tablespoons diced pimento and 1 and 1/2 cups diced cooked ham.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion, green pepper and garlic and saute for 2 minutes. Add flour, stir until smooth and add milk, cumin, salt and pepper. Cook 2 more minutes, stirring until thickened. Remove from heat and let set for 5 minutes.
In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks. Add 1/4 cup of warm mixture and stir to blend. Add the egg yolks to the rest of the mixture in the saucepan. Add pimento and ham and stir. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, beat egg whites with the cream of tartar until stiff peaks appear. Stir half of the whites into the sauce pan mixture. Gently fold the mixture into the rest of the whites. Pour the whole thing into a greased 2 quart oven dish and bake for 50 minutes until firm.
Mix yourself a Bloody Mary and put your feet up for a while. You have to be exhausted.
While our soldiers are serving our country in Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world their children are attending military base schools that are in deplorable condition. Schools are prone to leaks, termites, cracked ceilings and walls. Our soldiers' children, who are already missing their mothers and fathers, are forced to attend depressing schools that are literally falling apart. An investigation by Newsweek found that tens of thousands of children of U.S. military personnel attend military base schools that are old and neglected and fail to meet the Defense Department's own standards.
Why is no one talking about this.? Why is nothing being done to correct this disgusting and inexcusable situation? First Lady Michelle Obama stated that the administration has made the education of soldiers' children a top priority. With all due respect Ms. Obama there is no evidence whatsoever that these kids are even on your mind. In fact, tell these children how much your husband's administration has done, but forgive them if they can't pay attention to your every word. It is hard to concentrate when ceiling tiles are falling on your head.
Children are learning the abcs in boiler rooms, trailers, hallways, closets and whatever makeshift arrangement the school can come up with. This is a serious problem. The schools aren't safe. Military officials admit that at least three quarters of the schools they operate are beyond repair.
Our soldiers and their children deserve better. Instead of spending millions to study the mating habits of a butterfly, let's build these kids new schools. Now that's a shovel ready project that is begging for attention. I thinks it's time that the administration stop patting themselves on the back for a job not done at all. Our brave men and women are sacrificing their lives for our country. The least our country can do for them is to make sure their children are safe...POP...
It doesn't surprise me that the schools run and administered by Big Daddy are in ruin. Every administration in my lifetime has had some kind of program for education, is it any wonder the trend has become the home schooling of our nations children.
Hi Pop! You summed this whole issue up when you stated, "We ask so much of our young men and women and we give back so little."
To the Inn. I need a Bloody!
Not yet, with the new hub page format, I get a list of all hubs for whom I am a fan unless I have unchecked the follow at the bottom of a hub I have commented. You always have a tremendous following and comments on your hubs. Thanks for reading mine and commenting too. You are so special to me and so many here on hub pages. Your content always have meaning and are relative.
Pop,
Our military have historically gotten the short end of the stick and put up with it. Now there is talk in Democrat circles of using military pay and health care costs to balance the budget. I think we mess with their children at our own peril!!!
Pop, the schools are like the dated barracks state side troops dwell in on bases, base housing is much the same.
The drive to slim down kids is driven by the pentagon crying kids are too fat/unfit for military service, the main concern, they don't think they need to learn past boot camp, 50 live from the Inn...........
Government can't do anything very well, so why are we surprised?
One thing for sure, neither Moochell or Barrackie Boo have ever made anything to do with our military a top priority! They have made it plain time and time again their complete and utter disdain of the military. That’s evidenced by Barrackie Boo’s press conference room where he stands in front of some Middle Eastern Arabic inscribed yellow curtain which has replaced the traditional American Flags which used to frame the President! He and Moochell couldn’t make their intentions or feelings about this country any plainer!
As for where the billions are going this farce of an administration keeps clamoring for; well they have to keep the NEA happy; they have to feed the poor children Breakfast, lunch, dinner, second breakfast, weekend meals, birthday cakes, Christmas Cookies (wait they don’t believe in Christmas) all the while the children of the true patriots in this country are put at risk. But then again it all makes sense; isn’t he all about redistribution; in this case he taking from the Patriotic and giving to the Welfare Recipients who after all are 100% in the camp of his supporters.
Schools out for our soldiers, schools out for their children
Schools breaking into pieces; Mooc-chell she just don’t care
No more money for the re-pairs
It’s being given to the children of wel-fare
Schools out for our soldiers, schools out for their children
This is deplorable. It is not as though taxes are not being paid for better facilities.
POP: Well, I'm back from my trip up north.l I have missed you. I just received this email from Hub Pages about their new format. HOpe it works.
As for the military schools, they should be the best, and the pentagon should be pushing for better education for the children of our military. Shame on them, and shame on Michelle for stating that this is a priority - which we all know it is not.
I think I need to go to the bar and catch up on what I have missed. Someone, please save me a seat....
Good afternoon POP...Little late getting to the table today...still cleaning up after that monsoon yesterday...temps are around 110 by noon so we have to get things done outside early in the morning...
This is a g--damn shame...Here we are spending millions on foreign aid and we can't even take care of our own heroes children...National priorities are set by the president, who is also the commander in chief of all the armed forces. I guess we know where his priorities are: India, Egypt, Pakistan, Chad, Morocco, Columbia, and about a thousand others...The govt is still subsidizing folks displaced by Katrina, why not use some of those idle trailers for temp classrooms, kick some brass butts, and make it happen, now...
See you at the tavern, Pop...I bet my cats and dogs were wetter than yours...Larry
This certainly is a disgrace. We spend $500,000 on studying shrimp on treadmills but we can't fund decent schooling? Disgusting!!
See you at the inn.
It sounds to me the first blame goes to the military brass. They write and implement their budgets and obviously have not put a penny toward the schools. Meanwhile, how many schools have we built in Iraq and Afghanistan??? But again, many of the military brass who make it to the top are politicians - and there's the answer.
Well, do not let them scratch you along the way...Sure wish we had some of that down here...you are blessed indeed!
Well, heck, Pop, Michelle only said the KIDS were a top priority, not the SCHOOLS. Ya gotta really pin these people down, doncha know. Listening to them is kinda like crafting one of Daniel Webster's deals with the Devil, and the Devil is (as we know) in the details.
It wouldn't even be that expensive to build new schools for 'em, either. I'm betting thousands of us veterans (many of us with mad construction skills) would gladly DONATE a bit of time to Get 'R' Done. All the admin would have to do would be pay for the raw building supplies, point to a spot, and say, "Build one there!"
That would be way too fast and efficient for the feds, though.

That is a disgrace! Take the money from B. S. projects and build some schools for these kids. If Michelle wanta to open her mouth, let her shove a cheeseburger in it. Makes me want a drink. I am also exhausted from making breakfast. BARTENDER...........
