A Paloma and the PIP-POP Awards
61The Envelope Please...
Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is PIP-POP Tuesday, January 11, 2011. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin in a few minutes, so let's prepare our customary liquid breakfast and head for the theater. Today we will be "cooking" up a Paloma which is a tequila cocktail that is light and fruity. You will need 2 ounces of blanco tequila, 6 ounces of fresh grapefruit soda, 1/2 ounce lime juice and salt for rimming. Rim a collins glass with salt. Fill the glass with ice and add tequila and lime juice. Top off with grapefruit soda. Put on your best clothes and carry your Paloma to the theater. The "winners" await us.
Welcome everyone to the 17th weekly presentation of the PIP-POP Awards. Please welcome New York Times columnist Paul Krugman to the stage along with a representative of the editorial staff of the paper. This POP is being presented to the Times and to you Mr. Krugman for fueling the fires of hate and blame in the aftermath of the deadly Arizona shooting. The New York Times expressed the twisted view that it is legitimate to hold Republicans and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the anger that has produced the vast majority of violent threats against politicians. Mr. Krugman you were the icing on the cake adding nothing to the dialogue but misplaced blame and off the wall accusations. In your own words you said, "We don't have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was". Mr. Krugman, this tragic event wasn't political as we all know now and your suggestion that it was makes you one of the most irresponsible people on the planet. Place take your POP and take your seat.
Our second POP of the morning goes to Arizona's Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. Sheriff Dupnik, shame on you for suggesting almost immediately in the wake of the tragic shootings that radio and television talk shows were somehow responsible for inciting a man to kill 6 people and wound 13 others. Your words were beyond irresponsible and inflammatory and sadly, you have certainly earned this award. You may return to your seat.
The third POP of the morning goes to MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. The "Special Comment" you delivered on a special Saturday edition of Countdown is memorable and certainly worthy of a POP. You described Sarah Palin and other conservative public figures as "slightly less demented" than the gunman who carried out the attacks on Saturday. We can't help but wonder how you would describe yourself and your irresponsible accusations, sir. Please take your POP and sit down.
Our fourth POP of the morning is being presented to CBS, CNN, NBC and ABC for attempting to blame Sarah Palin and the Tea Party for the Tuscon shootings. Will one representative from each network please come up to accept the award? Understand this gentlemen, a crazed gunman who sleeps in a tent with a skull was solely responsible for this tragedy. It is utterly shameful that all of you would choose to capitalize upon this nightmare in order to discredit people you oppose. Take your POP and sit down.
Our last award of the morning is a PIP and it goes to the heroes who went above and beyond in the wake of the Arizona tragedy. Will Mr. Daniel Hernandez, Colonel Bill Badger and Patricia Maisch please come up to the podium? On behalf of the nominating committee, the breakfastpoppers and the American people we would like to honor you for your bravery in the face of such danger. You embody all that is good in the world and it truly is an honor and a privilege to be in your presence.
It is time to bring the show to a close. I thank all of you for attending and I look forward to the day when the PIPS will reign supreme. PIP-PIP Hooray...POP Goes The Weasels...

Good morning Pop, I'm so glad the heros got a PIP as they kept their head in a horrible crisis and did what needed to be done very effectively. As for the whole POP group they are a disgrace to the positions they hold and I think they all ought to lose those positions for their irresponsible actions. See you at the inn.
A big "amen" to all your POP Award commentary and lots of "dittos" on the PIP! Here is yet another example of where the rabid left gets a pass by trying to connect the dots on something simply caused by a demented soul who suddenly made up his mind to kill and found targets of opportunity. These are the same people who will point to guns as evil things in and of themselves and cite the annual deaths caused in the USA by them ignoring the facts that over 55% of those deaths are suicides...the person wanted to take their own life...if not with a gun, then whatever is the next convenient item. Where do we stop outlawing on the grounds or irrational behavior and apply common sense. This occurrence in Arizona while tragic and regrettable is the work of a mind not functioning in a rational manner...murder is not a rational decision and it is certainly not something induced by talk show hosts and politicians no matter which side of the aisle they speak from in the USA. As long as we are willing to make excuses like this as the basis for the problem, the problem will never really get addressed...just swept under the rug while we use it as the basis to get rid of the guns, to ban public events, to take away our freedom of speech, to control the Internet...yeah it all sounds good until it comes to your doorstep and infringes on your rights. At that point you find yourself asking the question, "what demented soul came up with this stupidity?" A people so overly willing to give up the rights granted them under the Constitution will soon be a people who have no rights at all. Otherwise, the proper response is to go out and shoot two talk show host and three politicians as a solution to the problem...God I hate when we get this stupid. WB
As usual, a great awards ceremony. For the winners of the PIP, they are truly heroes. They stepped up and delivered. As for the POP "winners", a pox upon their houses. Or something like that. Let's discuss at the bar. BARTENDER.........
Pop,
Great awards!!!!!!!!!!
I thought people couldn't go any lower but I was proved wrong by those who used this tragic shooting for political advantage!!!!!!! Lord help all of us!!!!!!!!
POP - Another deserving crowd of winners in all aspects. The LSM crowd will never get it, however they continue to live up to our expectations since those expectations are all low. The great citizens who saw their duty and did it are a great example for each and all of us. Great Job!
I can't make that drink down here since all the salt is out on the roads so I'll just do my cuervo gold straight up. See ya at the Inn if I can get there not sure if I need Ice skates or Snow shoes may have to use both! But I raise my glass to the heroes of Tucson! Hear! Hear!

Pop, I also commend the actions of the three above PiP Award winners. True heroes in my book whose actions probably saved several lives. As for the PoP awards, an appropriate write and good assessment. It's a blame game trying to pass the guilt and responsibility off others rather than the ones with jam on their face.
Dear POP... this is pretty much expected. These people cannot get out of their own way it would seem. I was actually thinking about this at length last night; that a clearly mentally ill man who set out to kill another person, who happened to be a Democrat, would lead the media to turning this into a case of Republicans v. Democrats; or a vendetta against Palin et al... I am not fan of Sarah Palin, and I may not like what the Democrats are doing to this country, but what that has to do with a sick kid who committed an unspeakable crime, killing people, wounding others, I just cannot fathom. It is just too easy. It is almost as sick as the gunman... it is tiring and there really is no place for this. I saw the last few minutes of the interview with Patricia Maisch that Ken Olbermann conducted. As she so eloquently described her horrific ordeal and her brave act of heroism, the schmuck decided to punctuate the interview by asking whether or not she thought the divisive nature of politics played any part in the attack (I am paraphrasing here)... Pathetic. Simply pathetic. I am saddened by the events that happened in AZ. Sad for the families who lost loved ones, whose losses are now being discussed in the context of politics as usual...I am going to need something stronger than the Paloma this morning, clearly.
Morning POP...I'll just echo Wayne's comments and add that this response from the left looks suspiciously orchestrated, as is they had all these accusations lined up and ready as soon as something like this happened...the vicious attacks started almost immediately with op-ed's pouring forth from major newspapers, ranting blogs online, and public officials playing a rehearsed blame game...
There were many heroes that day besides the three you have honored here...the elderly husband that threw his body in front of the shooter, protecting his wife, and being killed as the result...the young man coming out of the Safeway store that heard the shooting, dropped his grocery bags, and ran towards the shots, tackling the gunman without hesitation...the intern that provided emergency treatment for those that suffered shock and gunshot wounds, actions that actually saved the life of the congresswoman...
See you at the tavern, POP...lets hold a moment of silence in honor of those affected by this tragedy...Larry
The seething anger and vitriol is coming not from the right as charged, but from the furious left. The nation clearly rejected them last November, and this baseless attack following a tragedy is their response.
I think it is beginning to backfire as we learn that the shooter is actually a non-political madman and paid no attention to political rhetoric from either side!
BPop, the left will never waste a good tragedy to advance their agenda. This spouting they did against Palin and co, may come back and haunt them. Or it would if we had any good media people covering it.
Keep on hubbing!
Pop, great action to award the Pips to those who jumped the idiot and held him down, while others responded to medical needs of living bleeders that survived.
In this state of "legal" carry I wish there was one that had trained to respond to an active shooter and offered his/her skill to stop this guy and save the state the cost of a trial, and more people who had medical trauma training to stop some from bleeding out while waiting for the ambulances and EMT personnel. the Pops were deserving, as the opinions of the media are not worth spit,as they would have balled up on the ground and cried for mama; displaying their true value to America. Sad times that call for "Tequila Slammers" I'll show you how to make them at the inn. Bring a bottle of Sprite and a hand full of "lime flavored" salt packets next to the register in liqueur stores and we'll slam a few in honor of the departed here in Arizona Land, peace 50
Come on Pop; everyone knows that the typical listener to Rush, Sean or Glen Beck have read Mein Kampf cover to cover at least 5 times and use the Communist Manifesto as their bible; I know I sure do; don’t you Pop. The problem with all this is the same problem we on the right have every time these lefty loons pose their putrid pontifications; we don’t reject their premise outright. We need to answer every question with; “you gotta be kidding; you expect me to believe this psycho was somehow motivated by listening to talk radio. He is the antipathy of the average talk radio listener. The only radio he listens to is stations that play Heavy Metal Music!” This should also be used when conservative commentators are interviewing NUTCASES like the Tucson Sherriff who tried to make that same outlandish connection!
As for New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, he along with the Tucson Sherriff don’t need proof to back their twisted theories; they just know; such is the curse the truly enlightened suffer they know things but can never prove any of their assumptions. Just like Global Warming is real and Islam is a peaceful religion and Iran only wants to use Nuclear Power for peaceful purposes and Castro’s Cuba is a Mecca for advanced medical care; you know those types of unsubstantiated premises.
Keith Olbermann; is there a more insignificant pundit than that Glittering Jewel of Colossal Ignorance? May I suggest you modify your Pop Award in the good Mr. Olberman’s case and present him with the first ever Cranial Rectal Inversion Award; the bronze statue should depict a man bending at the waist with his head inserted into his own rectum. This MORE ACCURATELY DEPICTS Mr. Olberman’s approach to reality!
Huuuuum a crazed individual who sleeps in a tent with a skull; oh you were describing the perpetrator; I thought you were describing the representative from ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC or CNN sorry Pop I misunderstood!
POP Goes The Weasels; well you certainly called out several of them!
I don't think the newscasters have caught on yet that many folks think they are just as much responsible for the mess this country is in as anyone else. POP's are well deserved for all.
sorry I am arriving at dinner time instead of breakfast, but your words ring no less true this late in the day. Thanks for naming the heroes, THEY should be the names remembered instead of the name of the murderer.
Dear Pop, thank you for putting into words the very think that all of us crazy conservatives have been thinking. I think more and more people are moving to our way of seeing the truth, and thanks to you my bloggers love your hubs. You should be doing a weekday talk show or be a columist...Love you rate up peace darski
The POP Awards were all well deserved. Krugman displayed an ignorance of the facts that was stunning. And what can be seriously said about Keith Olbermann? His self-righteous slander would be as laughable as any SNL skit if it weren't so frightening. The man has delusions to be sure--twisted delusions. And how he remains employed at MSNBC is testimony to STUPIDITY.
Sorry for the rant. Great Hub. Thanks.
You ALWAYS nail it! I would only add that that idiot Krugman is a ECONOMIC reporter! What in the WORLD was he doing writing such a thing in the first place and the editors at the NY Times should have killed the column the moment he sent it to them. What a bunch of total IDIOTS. No wonder their paper is in the toilet - along with their Pop award because that's where they'll remain with that kind of whacky behavior.
You hit it all Pop! I stand in awe of your powers of observation!
Pop,
Good stuffWhy does the left have the right to blame thr Right? a Republican judge-DIED. this shooter was a nutcase commy!!! Nothing the Right has done nothing to push to violence- but-the left is the ones that call for republican deaths- cheney Bush Palin-Limbaugh-all have rec;d multiple death threats-
Hell there were multipleMOVIES about Killing W-
The vitriol is all on the left-
Jared L was and is a nutcase and his Ex girlfreind said he was coo-coo nutballz.....wht creepy mug sot....
See you at the bar i got the first round of Pepsi's
TH
breakfastpop (applause! applause!) I approve and support every thing you said! Glad you said it!!
Had to check out your recipe--since Paloma Road is one of the dirt tracks you take enroute to our Border Fort!
This set of POPS (and of course the PIPS as well) is even more "on target" than your usual sterling set of awards. I, too, think the left is just slightly less insane than the shooter. Very, very well put.
Love this recipe and really enjoyed the PIP-POPS. You are absolutely right on! Following you, whether breakfast lunch or dinner is always a highlite in my routine. I thank you so much! Love and laughter to you, my friend.

POP:It is utterly disgusting to have the MSM using this tragedy to promote their own ratings. You are certainly aware of my feelings about the MSM. Let's keep to the facts - there's nothing wrong with saying that "we just don't have any information at this time". I have more respect for a station or newspaper that says that rather then speculate - and their speculations were certainly way off base.
As for the people who brought the gunman down, they are true heroes, and I raise my glass to them.
As usual, another great award ceremony, POP.
I'm now off to the bar - someone save me a seat.....
