Banana Bars and a Class on Governing

By breakfastpop

Attention!

Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Wednesday, June 23, 2010. A radical professor has invited us to sit in on a lecture he is giving on the art of governing. He has requested that we just sit and listen and not try to participate or shout obscenities. I told him he could count on us. Let's prepare some Banana Bars this morning that we can bring to the lecture. If our mouths are occupied chewing, it should make it easier not to go berserk.

For the banana bars you will need 4 cups uncooked quick oats, 1 and 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas, 1 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup margarine, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 13 by 9 inch baking pan with spray. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg, bananas, cinnamon and salt and stir. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Spread mixture in baking pan and bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow bars to cool, cut them into squares, pack them up and let's head for the lecture. Start chewing the minute the professor starts talking.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen. Today I will be speaking to you about the art of governing. We have all witnessed the failure of democracy here and abroad and I am quite sure you all recognize that it is time for some significant "change". At this particular moment in time we have been blessed with the coming of the greatest instrument of "change" and his name is Barack Hussein Obama. Where he came from or how he got here is a very long story that is still developing. Let us leave that subject for another time and instead learn from his actions as they unfold before us. We are privileged to be living in the dawn of a new era, when democracy and freedom takes a back seat to a brilliant and charismatic dictatorship. Witness the early stages of this "change" with the takeover of the mainstream media. It is imperative to get people in the media in your corner. They will faithfully distort the facts and present statistics that will always prove that the public is behind everything you do and say. Take note of how brilliantly the President and his crew denigrated and demeaned Fox News. This is a very vital step in the process. You must make sure the public hears only what you want them to hear. Having accomplished that goal, now it is time to take over big business. Feed upon the anger of the masses who may have lost money in the stock market and want to strangle their brokers. Tell the people who have no assets that is the bankers who are keeping them impoverished and before long your attempt to run the banks will be met with approval. Now go after large companies like General Motors. Tell the public that the government(you) need to run the company in order to save it from bankruptcy. Pepper your takeovers with giveaways. Amazing car prices, promises you can't keep, rebates on just about anything will do the trick. Always give the public someone to despise. Big business is a sure winner, the rich, Wall Street, and the the oil companies to name just a few.

One element you will need is a crisis. If one doesn't fall into your hands, then feel free to create one. Look how fortunate President Obama was to have this oil spill. It gave him an opportunity to come down on BP and extort millions of dollars from them. Now of course that is not how we are supposed to conduct ourselves in a democracy that is governed by the rule of law, but it is a marvelous way to do things in a dictatorship. You need something, you take it. Remember the end always justifies the means. Forget about the Constitution, it is as outdated as the people who wrote it. Instead, think Communist Manifesto.

Another important element of the "change" is the constant use of the Congressional hearing process. It would be more appropriate to describe these proceedings as Inquisitions but that term might make some people uncomfortable. Call it what you like but the effect is the same. Bring anyone who disagrees with the President or those that do his bidding before a panel of fools and question and scold them before the nation and the world. It's fun, empowering and the "right" thing to do. The most important element of this "change" is the expansion of the powers of the federal government. Inch by inch, company by company, bank by bank, General by General, the President must assume control of the very air that we breathe. If he decides to do nothing about a crisis as is evident in this oil spill, then realize there is a method to his madness. He and he alone knows where we are headed and why and we should all be grateful for his wisdom. Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die.

We are part of the "change" and one day soon, we can proudly say that we were were witness to the downfall of democracy and the rise of a benevolent dictatorship...POP...

Poppy...that was one of your best! You hit it out of the park! The whole time that I was reading this I had images in my head of a picture of Obama greeting Chavez. They were grinning at each other like long lost brothers of a communist fraternity. You can just imagine how much of a favor Obama has just done for Chavez in shutting down deep-water drilling in the Gulf for six months. Whether he accomplishes it or not does not matter for just the talk of it will send the companies, equipment, and people scurrying to other areas. That is the reason he immediately announced that the government would appeal the ruling that was handed down yesterday. He announced without so much as consulting his legal advisers. Oh...I forgot, Obama is not only a community organizer like Mao, he is also a brilliant lawyer. Forgive my indiscretion. Come 2012, Biden is in the crapper, and Hilary is on the ticket as his VP running-mate. This move will get the Hilirites solidly into his camp and all but guarantee that Hilary can coast into the office in 2016 as chief dictator...assuming Obama will relinquish it. Since he is the best thing that America has seen since Franklin D., serving more than the mandatory two terms is "ludichris", to use a sic pronounciation of the word that the vast majority of his fans employ at the drop of a hat. Man, you got my soapbox out this morning...I got to stop. After all, this is your hub! Thanks much...WB

Good morning Wayne,

I love it when you get fired up and I thank you. I woke up this morning with the clear conviction that Obama is taking over our lives and destroying our freedom and he is doing so in plain sight. He isn't even trying to be subtle about his behavior. I suppose that is because his arrogance can't allow for criticism or defeat. I'll meet you at the bar later and we'll commiserate about the death of freedom.

The sad thing about today's lesson is that it is true. The Constitution is circumvented and ignored. There is something going on that we are not provy to, particularly with respect to the oil catastrophe. Why is all still leaking more than two months after the explosion? Why have offers from countries that have dealt with similar situations not been accepted? People still don't realized that the idiot in the white house said whatever he needed to say to get elected and then goes about HIS business which is not necessarily what people want. I certainly hope that the people along the Gulf Coast who make their living from the water, from the tourist business, the restaurant business, etc. remember how badly this crisis was handled come this November. And for those adversely affected by the oil disaster who voted for Obumma should remember the terrific job he has done when 2012 comes around. This guy makes me want to head to the bar. Sorry but proclaiming someone to be a Radical and a Professor is being redundant!

Democracy here and abroad has not failed; it has been hijacked. Barrack Hussein Obama has kidnapped Democracy and held it hostage. His willing accomplices in this crime were of course the Main Stream Media. All dictators start off brilliant and charismatic; how else are they able to Pipe the Voting Rats to the polls chanting their various epithets; in this case it was Hope and Change, Hope and Change!

Dictators always target for destruction entities that attempt to expose them. Fox News AND Talk Radio are the last best hope to WAKE UP AMERICA! This Regime has done a marvelous job of demonizing Big business, the Stock Market, the Banks and any other straw men they chose to invent as the source of the peoples troubles. Remember Hitler focused the hatred of the German People on the Jews. All dictators need an enemy around which to galvanize the people’s fury!

Fortunately for this regime the crisis keep coming. The astute among us will realize their policies are responsible for the crisis but the majority of We The People; the ones that get their daily dose of current events from Queen Oprah; the View, ABC,CBS,NBC,CNN,MSNBC, Chris Mathews, Anderson Cooper and so on and so on and scubbie doobie doobie, haven’t a clue. They have no idea these crisis are self inflicted except for the Gulf Oil Spill which was exacerbated by this Party’s Prior Policies! The Communist Manifesto along with Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals are indeed this Regime’s Governing Documents!

Inquisitions, right on Pop. They are indeed sessions during which confessions, from Big Business or whoever their target of choice happens to be, are extracted through torture. The reality is the American way of life; Capitalism; Freedom from Tyranny are being placed on trial by this Regime!

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of America; leave your clothes over in the corner and put on that pair of grey pajamas; pick up your rice bowl and shovel and go to work!

I can't disagree with anything here, with one exception. That being the description of the congressional hearings with BP. I know I seem to be at odds with most of my fellow hubbers on this particular issue, but I see Congress' actions as having been entirely appropriate and useful. I'm willing to let them have it when they get it wrong, but I'm equally willing to give them credit when they get it right. With millions of gallons of crude oil polluting our Gulf of Mexico, affecting the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people who may be out of work, or who may lose their businesses as a result, the Congress has an obligation to speak on behalf of the American people who sent them there to get answers to simple questions; such as, did you (BP) act in a manner that was illegal or unscrupulous to cause harm to Americans? I think BP is and was complicit. I think they took steps in the consideration of saving time and money, and those steps caused a very big mess that affects Americans.

Granted, Congress is super good at screwing things up. And yes, watching them there, grilling Tony Hayward about potential wrongdoing, complacency, whatever, does cause me to raise my brow just a little bit and consider that perhaps they (the Congress) are equally deserving of such an exchange by the Amercan people...it does NOT mean I am not going to praise them in this case.

President Obama is handling the situation abysmally. The Congress has been acting abysmally regarding so many things it's not even funny. Still, when they do nothing we call them lackards, and when they do SOMETHING we call them bullies. We cannot have it both ways, and this oil spill should not have become the political issue it has.

As for the $20 billion fund that was created to deal with claims, I think had we left it up to BP, Americans would have ended up paying the bills—and I'll be damned if I want to pay one more penny in taxes to help a corporation pay for its screw-ups.

Some of the conservatives on Hub pages are just too far gone to agree with anything the president does, even if they agree with his policies.

Just to clarify a few points, you mention that Obama demeans fox news...kidding right? Have you seen the way Fox treats the president? Fox is also the network that has characters like Glenn Beck predicting the collapse of the economy and at the same time pumping Goldline and gold stocks. Talk about conflict of interest, he is paid by goldline and then hypes investments in gold on his show. Fox has it right when they call themselves an "enterainment" network, they are certainly not "news."

You allude to Obama 'running' the banks, etc. It was McCain who stopped campaigning and raced to DC to beg congress to pass the TARP. If you recall, he even berated Obama for not following his lead sooner. Last point, Tarp was passed while Bush was president. Even so, most econmists (almost all) agree that we would have collapsed into a great depression had we not acted as we did. Lastly, congressional hearings broadcast on TV give the people the opportunity to hear the testimony and facts of the case. Your talking about a company with 760 OSHA violations (Compare that to Exxon Mobil with 1). So your saying you don't want transparency?

POP, I do think you make good points from time to time but the 'hatefest' is distorting the truth.

Springboard profile image

Springboard Level 5 Commenter 23 months ago

LRC, the same question could be asked, "Have you seen how the other news media treats the president?" We have to be realists in all matters. I try to see both sides of every issue. I'm a conservative. I'm a card carrying republican. I am NOT, however, also therefore a democrat basher. The president is getting things wrong, and the only thing Fox News may be guilty of is presenting and reporting on that truthfully and accurately. They aren't going to try and sugar coat the failures is what I'm getting at.

As for TARP, I think McCain did the right thing by stopping his campaign and putting country first to deal with that very important issue. I commented as well that, at the time, I thought Obama showed a lack of concern over the issue, and thought his lack of urgency regarding the matter should have been taken as another "red flag" that he would handle ALL matters this way—and it appears he has. TARP, IMO, WAS necessary, and I think for the very reasons you pointed out. The economy WOULD have collapsed. The difference is in the AFTER part. What Barack did with the banks AFTER TARP. There's where there are a few question marks. GM leaves a few question marks as well, as does Chrysler.

Just like we (conservatives) can't always only point at the president's failures, the democrats and Obama supporters cannot claim every action the president takes as a successful one, nor can they or should they point back to Bush nearly every single time as a way of trying to make the mess Bush left seem bigger, and more complex, and therefore more taxing to correct.

To me, the pivotal moment came when Robert Gibbs told the press how BHO received the Rolling Stone article. Gibbs said the pres was "angry" after reading it. A true statesman would understand the source of the article and realize that people in high places are often misquoted; sometimes intentionally and sometimes not.

A true statesman would send Gibbs out there with a message of reconciliation and patience. A true statesman would assume the best about his top general, rather than springing to the conclusion that the guy needed to be recalled to Washington for a public flogging.

John Kerry was the only sane person in Washington. He advised patience and suggested that no one jump to conclusions until all the facts were available. Anyone with 1/4 of a brain knows that Rolling Stone is in business to sell advertising space and subscriptions. Kudos to Kerry.

Your latest piece kept me fascinated throughout. And the commentary shows that many reading your pieces have insight; you've got a good thing going Pop-keep it up.

Hopey-changey is busy trying to change all that he can, meanwhile blaming Bush, who DID set some bad precedence, for America's mess. One thing I've noticed is that he hasn't altered the Bush policy on illegal immigration; the borders still resemble swiss cheese. Hopey-changey wasn't interested in change here-Bush wanted open borders and so does hopey-changey.

The media tells us only what they decide is important. Now here's what I call important: The breaching of our borders by the Brazilian smuggling ring that has brought in hundreds of Somalis over the past couple of years. There was SOME talk of this on Fox, but it's gone. One of the biggest KNOWN breaches of our borders and most of us know hardly anything about it.

My bet is that Hopey-changey and his buddy BEholden...or Holder are undoubtably keeping quiet on as much as they can with this. A full revelation would damage the chances of passing 'comprehensive immigration reform'.

Sorry for the long commentary Pop.

Still POP. What would we have them do? Sit with their hands tied and look pretty? We KNOW they can't do that. Again, I point out Waxman! I still say that when they actually do their work we should have the ability to recognize that, and give them a pat on the back and say, "Well, it's about time guys!"

I am getting the impression that because democrats are the majority, the word "Congress" is now synonymous with "democrat," and this makes them a group of ne'er do wells in the eyes of conservatives. It's as partisan as we can possibly be, and I also think the wrong approach.

It's this kind of attitude and behavior that hurts us in the end. Stalwart partisanship gets nothing done except building heavily fortified walls between the two sides. We actually did have a Congress at one time that was able to see through past party lines—nowadays the votes are almost identical to the number of votes POSSIBLE in each party.

Granted, the president is as left as they come. And the dems are voting more to the left than usual as well. Still.

Nicomp, while I was in full agreement with President Obama's decision to fire Gen. McChrystal over the article, taking into consideration that McChrystal did not refute any part of it, your point does bring up an interesting question; on many of the important issues facing the nation the president needed "time" to gather all information in order to come to conclusions as to the best possible plan.

He jumped the gun on the black professor. Perhaps he jumped the gun on this one, even if ultimately the jumped to conclusion happened to be substantiated. Just found it interesting...and there was another case, just can't seem to bring it forward this morning. Need more coffee methinks.

Good afternoon Springboard,

I agree with you, but the only reason Democrat has become another term for Congress is because they are in control. Ideally, I would like to see a bi-partisan attempt at leadership which would really represent the best interests of the American people. Any other thing just shuts people out.

nicomp profile image

nicomp Level 6 Commenter 23 months ago

@Springboard: With all due respect, you have no idea if Gen. McChrystal refuted any part of the article or not. A person in that position does not negotiate in the mainstream media. I don't know either, but I suspect that he was ordered to stop talking to the media in short order after his temperamental commander-in-chief read the article.

Springboard profile image

Springboard Level 5 Commenter 23 months ago

He publicly stated that he was sorry for the article, and publicly did not deny any thing that was stated in it. If anything would have been in dispute, the General would have clearly stated that he, or members of his staff had been misquoted. He was very clear in his affirmation that the reporter reported statements accurately, and that he thought the quotes were a mistake, and that he was sorry that they were said. That is a fact.

BTW, a person in that position may not negotiate in the mainstream media—but just to remind you, if that were true he'd have never permitted Rolling Stone to do the story in the first place.

The glib comment about Biden was made directly to the reporter.

POP, that "any other thing" right now, in my mind, is a little bit of bashing, such as what we're doing to Congress over BP. It shuts out the fact that something must be done, someone must be held accountable, and someone must pay for it—determining all of the details of this is what the Congress is there trying to do. What is in the best interests of the American people is to get this mess cleaned up and ensure that the money comes out of the right pocket, and determine if BP conducted its business in an unsafe manner, which is bad for America, bad for workers, bad for business, and bad for the economy (as this will soon become more apparent as to its effects).

In my mind I dispute the argument that has been made that Congress has no business questioning business. I mean, for the most part I would say that is true. They shouldn't have any business there. They should be able to let the free markets do their thing unfettered. The exception is when business is conducted in a manner inconsistent with sound business practice—such as with a disregard to safety, the environment in which it operates, or if business is conducted in an otherwise illegal or dishonest manner. Then the Congress has an obligation IMO to do something about it. At the very least to get to the bottom of it.

If that happens to be from a democratic majority in this case, so be it. I'm absolutely willing to give them a pat on the back, and they are getting one big one from me right now on this issue specifically.

Dear Springboard,

By "any other thing" I refer to the manner in which the Democrats conducted business in Congress, virtually shutting out the Republicans on many issues. Wouldn't you agree that people like me who didn't vote for Obama deserve to be represented? As far as Congress is concerned in reference to BP, Bp had already agreed to give the money in exchange for not being responsible for all those idle oil workers left without pay because of the moratorium. I believe the hearings were a dog and pony show which was probably part of the deal. The outcome, of course, is a good one. I imagine its implementation will be a nightmare.

I still say BP has operated in such a derelict way, in the interest of saving money, it may well have opted in the future of filing for bankruptcy, leaving all claims pretty much out the window, at which time guess who would pony up the money? Granted, there's nothing saying BP will ever shell out more than the $20 billion depsite the no cap. If they lose money overall, they may still opt for bankruptcy. But at least the first $20 billion is covered. Call it a consolation prize?

I agree with you on the way the democratic Congress has operated since they got all the power. I was speaking only to the BP hearings. I want to make that clear.

I also disagree with the moratorium BTW. Again, I'm not giving any passes. Only credit where credit is due.

Dear Springboard,

I understand what you are saying. We really are on the same page, even if even if we sometimes read what's written a little differently. I love the back and forth.

Dear Maita,

So happy you enjoyed the breakfast. I long for the day when there is a return to true journalism. It may be a long way off.

Your Hubs and then the comments everyone leaves are always so entertaining! I'm way behind on my Hub reading but VOW I will be doing catch up. Grabbed this one before Popping off to night-night. You are amazing lady - you always write what I'm yelling at my television every time I watch the news. By law, the President CAN'T take their money - not simply by proclaiming it. But since when has Chicago style politics seen a law it likes??? Love, carol
