Blender Granola and the Observer

Not Again!

Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Thurday, September 29, 2011. Scotty, the Observer and our dear friend from outer space, has been examining our education system and he is saddened by what he has seen. He has asked us to prepare a boatload of homemade granola for breakfast and then he has requested the pleasure of our company at my house. He wants to discuss what he has observed, so let's do as he asks and prepare the cereal.

You will need a ton of ingredients so be prepared. Gather together 6 cups oats, 1 cup each of the following: sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, coconut, powdered milk, safflower oil, honey, raisins and chopped walnuts. You will also need 2 teaspoons vanilla.

In a very large bowl, mix together oats, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, coconut, powdered milk and walnuts. Combine safflower oil, honey and vanilla in a blender and mix. Add this to dry ingredients. Spread mixture in 2 large baking pans and bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour or until brown. Stir often. When finished add raisins. You will have enough cereal to last you for 24 days or you can keep one serving and let Scotty eat the other 23! See you at my house in a few minutes. I'll have plenty of Irish Coffees to go around.

Hello, my treasured earthling family. Let me get right to the heart of the matter. Your education system stinks and the federal government is making things worse. Federal spending on education has gone through the roof since the 1970's and the results have been dismal. All this interference and wasted money has done nothing to improve the quality of education in your nation. The teachers unions are another part of this failure because they and the federal government do their very best to prevent children from enrolling in charter, parochial or private schools which often prove to be better choices .

Your President Obama should give new thought to the federal government's involvement in the education of your children. He should, but he won't. He recently announced a plan that would allow states to opt out of the No Child Left Behind program if they met certain requirements that he, himself, laid down. Once again your president, initiated sweeping change by bypassing Congress. In effect, he has proposed replacing standards set by Congress with standards set by bureaucrats in Washington. In one sweeping gesture, your President Obama usurped the role of your Congress. Where was the public outcry?

The federal government's track record on education gets a failing grade. Parents should have the option of choosing the right school environment for their children. The federal government is manipulating the states by telling them they can opt out of NCLB if they follow the administration's education reforms. In other words, Washington is extending their reach into your lives through your children. No matter how much money the federal government throws into education, the results are still sub-standard. I think it's time to get the long arm of the federal government out of education and find out once and for all why your system is failing.

I agree the feds get a failing grade when it comes to education. Some told me once "You can't beat a man who knows his trade." Leave it to those who educate to do what they do best educate our children.

Pino Krisio 7 months ago

POP: The more government is involved, the worse off we are! I don't believe that NCLB is the best plan; however it is what we have, and was passed by Congress. Why Congress is not screaming I'll never know. I feel another letter to my Congressman coming on. Connie Mack, watch out! But for now, I'm off to the bar to see Scotty and the rest of the gang. Someone please save me a seat.....

Pop and Scotty,

The Federal incursion into education may have had good intentions but the abuse shown by the Communists and Nazis in controlling young people should give all thinking people pause.

Scotty; education by any other name smells just as bad. The federal government coupled with the NEA has managed to spend Billions and Billions of dollars on nothing more than a MONEY LAUNDRING SCHEME. The NEA extorts dues from its members then funnels most of those dues back to the Democratic Party in support of its candidates who then go to congress or the White House and Cry for more funds for Education.

The federal government does its very best to prevent children from enrolling in charter, parochial or private schools because those schools are not part of the Mob. The Don that rules over the NEA has no control over this group of schools so that is why this Regime attempts to keep children away from them. Even though the cost to educate per pupil is dramatically lower and the graduation rate, college attendance and over all GPA are dramatically higher!

Scotty, first and foremost we do not have a President we have a Dictator; a President GOVERNS, a Dictator RULES! As for Obama he will never allow States to opt out of the No Child Left Behind or any other Federal Government based program. That would mean giving up power but most importantly it would be the beginning of the erosion in the number of Democratic Voters. You see the DUMBER the population the more Democratic Voters there are. Those that are educated to get a job and take care of themselves tend to vote Republican those that drop out of school or finish through the 12 grade and still can’t read or do simple math tend to vote Democratic. It is the same throughout the 57 states Obama Visited during the 2008 campaign!

Scotty here’s a little ditty for you to sum it all up

We won’t get no choice

For our girls and boys

So quit your whining

Welfare’s their new toy

Schools ours for keeping

Schools ours forever

Educations blown to pieces

For your nephews and nieces

No more subjects

No school prayer

We still can’t read

But who cares

Schools ours forever

Schools ours for keeping

Educations blown to pieces

So quit your weeping

Good morning Patriot,

Bravo! Your comments and your ditty are spot on. This is just a tightening of the screws on just about everything we do from the minute we get up in the morning till we go to sleep. The federal government is like an octopus on the prowl. Where is the public outcry from Congress. Where is the public outcry from the people. If he gets 4 more years we're finished. See you at the Inn

This is truly the test of the Obama Administration...change as much as you can without due process and see what the people say. I am not sure this country deserves to have a democratic society given the fact that the majority of the population pays little or no attention to the actions of this president who bypasses the Congressional process at every turn. As ususally, the President is calling for more spending on education which will have no effect on the end result...it is the only solution that Washington knows and recommends. Quality and spending are not hand in hand. When have we spent enough? When is is possible that something else could be effecting the outcome of today's educational results? These are questions our media should be posing and our people should be asking before another dime is spent. WB

I have always been for Vouchers...Why can't Parents send their kids to GOOD Schools...We all have to pay such High Taxes. In Jersey, the average Town was paying $35,000 per student...INSANE, YES! And these Kids are NOT dong well. So spending these ridiculous amounts of money is NOT the answer. Good Timely Hub Breakfastpops.

Morning, Pop and Scotty...Excellent observations that point out the need to dissolve the Department of Education, a department that educates no one, that dictates non-debated standards without any input from parents or local school officials...their budget is the third largest of any agency, behind Defense and Health and Human Services, and yet math, reading comprehension, and language skills rank below most of the industrialized nations and several 3rd world countries...But wait...Our students do rank number one in self-esteem !!

Our current educational system values self-esteem over achievement, effort over success, and consistent results by everyone (regardless of how mediocre) over uneven results that include brilliance by some.

Watered-down standards are ably represented in various packaged curricula that value collective effort over individual achievement.

Ironically, this system that is built almost entirely on the concept of self-esteem is actually the antithesis of self-esteem, having produced an entire generation of children who can’t cope with basic academic skills. It’s also the antithesis of excellence, competitiveness and innovation...Larry

This is a Karl Marx dream. Free public indoctrination centers (euphemistically called “schools”) were a cornerstone of his ten point plan to train young communists.

When schools were small town and neighborhood owned and administered, education in the US was superb. But now that we have allowed consolidation, Washington dictates, administration by ‘professionals”, and hired far-left NEA “teachers”, we finally have exactly what Marx wanted!

Our schools now teach liberalism. Our kids no longer know that Washington was the first president, but they do know how to put on a condom, and have a deep respect for all sorts of sexual perversions. We are now churning out leftist indoctrinated morons, who can't read, write, spell, and have only a vague notion of how our great country came to be!

Marx is grinning in his grave.

Good afternoon Dexter,

Things really started going downhill after 1967! We really can't afford to turn our backs on this situation. The government has done a miserable job handling education and the Dept. of Education should be dismantled. See you at the Inn, Dexter.

Good afternoon maven,

I would like to send your comment to the fools in Washington and the Dept. Of Education. We have completely lost our way when it comes to education. Rather than risk having a child or a parent feel that they are not achieving we lower expectations and the C student becomes an A student. Our thinking and methods are so flawed that it is no wonder our kids lag behind the rest of the world. See you at the Inn, maven.

Dear Will,

And while Marx is grinning and applauding parents are twiddling their thumbs. We are turning out mediocre students at best. If kids come out having really learned anything it is because they taught themselves! Again I ask, where is the outcry? See you at the Inn.

You know I work as an educator in the public school system, and I see on a daily basis the waste in the schools. The fed Dept of Ed needs to be eliminated and control returned to the localities. Think of the savings if those bureaucrats were kicked off the public dime!!

Oh Scotty! I've been saying this for years - our educational system here on earth - particularly in the U.S. is broken. The National Education association needs to be shut down, the unions need to be OUT of our schools BY LAW and the STATES should be running the school systems WITH PARENTS. period.

I'm so glad an impartial observer agrees - I'm so glad to read this! Keep it up Scotty and tell Pop we need her on her soap box as well - we need every man woman and child and alien if we are to defeat the monster in the White House in 2012! Voted up and all the way!

Breakfastpop,

As many of us have figured out, tossing money at an issue --ANY issue-- is a recipe for disaster, corruption, and waste. History has repeated this lesson over and over ad nauseum... I am unsure and unsteady about the current state of education in this country. What I am 100% sure and steady about, however, is this: education, as well as many other social and cultural issues in this country, would greatly improve if the quality of our families improved. Without familial (traditional or otherwise) influences speaking and encouraging wisdom into the lives of our youth, the problems our nation now witness can only augment. This is my theory, of course. I'll end with one thought: all of us need more discipline.

breakfastpop profile image

breakfastpop Hub Author 7 months ago

Good morning carol,

The Dept. of Education serves no purpose other than to perpetuate themselves. Before the government starts cutting back on Medicare and Social Security I suggest they look at the waste that they create. They should get rid of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while they are at it.

breakfastpop Hub Author 7 months ago

Good morning Rob,

I can't disagree with anything you have said. The federal government has a horrible track record in education and they should remove themselves from the equation and yes parents have an important role in the education of their children. We need to examine our system and finally figure out why our schools are failing and fix it immediately. I suggest we look back in history and learn from it. Our schools started going downhill in the late 60's. See you at the Inn.

This page is awesome--across from the Hub detailing how much of a crock the Obama approach to brainwashing (aka education), there is (at least at this moment) a big green ad for shoes called Crocs.

Of course, the whole "green thing" is pretty much a crock, too...:)

Pop, your response to caltex is smack on target. Example: When he was 6 years of age, a nephew of mine made it clear the English language was not his strong suit. To rectify the situation, one of my aunts (since deceased) who'd been a school teacher spent much of her summer driving 100 miles round trip daily to tutor the lad.

Later, as a young Marine thrice deployed to Iraq, he became the ONLY member of his Boat Company to (on his own) learn Arabic in order to be able to communicate with the locals and translate for his unit.

How's that for setting standards?

Voted Up and Stuff.

breakfastpop profile image

breakfastpop Hub Author 7 months ago

Good morning Ghost,

If you expect excellence you are more likely to achieve it. When my kids were in elementary school there were children getting A's in reading when they really couldn't read very well at all. The thinking was that if a student wasn't expected to achieve, then he deserved an A for doing the best he could. Sick isn't it?
