Chinois Pancakes and the Observer
60So What!
Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Thursday, January 19, 2012 and Scotty, the Observer, is in town. He is a bit confused about the current state of the campaign for the presidency and he wishes to talk to us about his confusion. Let's prepare some Chinois Pancakes for breakfast this morning and gather at my house where Scotty will be anxiously awaiting your arrival.
For the pancakes you will need 1/4 cup flour, a pinch of salt, 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 1/2 cup milk, 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 thinly sliced scallion, 1 teaspoon butter and 6 small scallions cut in half.
In a small bowl combine flour, salt, egg and sesame oil. Whisk in the milk and remove all the lumps. Stir in ginger, garlic and thinly sliced scallion. Heat butter in non-stick crepe pan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons batter and swirl the pan to coat the bottom with batter. Cook over high heat until golden brown. Turn the pancake over and brown the other side. Remove from pan, cut in half, place a scallion on each and roll into a cone shape. It's delicious served with plum sauce. Bring the pancakes to my place. I will supply chop sticks and some Grand Marnier.
Hello, my dear earthling friends. Thank you so much for this delicious breakfast. I have been following the race for the presidency quite carefully and I must say I don't understand what these people you call Republicans are doing. I realize that they are battling each other to win the nomination, but is it truly necessary to destroy each other in the process? After all, isn't defeating the incumbent president the whole idea?
I will use this current brouhaha about Mitt Romney and his tax return to explain my position. Did his fellow Republicans just realize that he is indeed a wealthy man? Are these candidates completely ignorant of the tax code and what it allows and mandates? It would appear so.
When Mr. Romney said that his tax rate was probably around 15 percent because most of his income came from investments, I was rather surprised to hear such a collective gasp. Capital gains are taxed at 15 percent because you people try to encourage investment in your nation and the tax code reflects that. Mr. Romney isn't breaking the law, he is abiding by the tax code. A lower capital gains tax encourages investment in your country and fosters job growth. This sudden disingenuous surprise upon hearing about this is absurd and frankly embarrassing. Personally, this alien, thinks this would be a perfect time for Mr. Romney to jump all over the idea of a flat tax. That way all those "rich" people who have fallen out of favor in your free society would be paying what all of you are paying. And another added bonus would be that all those people who are exempt from paying federal taxes would suddenly have some skin in the game.
Yes, Mr. Romney is a very rich man. He got that way because he understands business. Vilifying him for his success is so anti-American that it makes this alien's head spin. Now there seems to be a public outcry for him to release his tax returns. Okay, then, I think all the candidates including Pres. Obama should do so and in the spirit of full disclosure you should ask for their college transcripts and their original birth certificates. as well.
Once that is out of the way, perhaps the electorate will be able to get behind a candidate that they can believe in. That can't happen until everyone in both parties stops behaving like ignorant fools who just fell off a turnip truck. The tax code is the tax code. If you don't like it propose meaningful changes, but don't carry on about people who are just following the law.
Thanks so much for letting me get this off my chest. Please pass the pancakes. NA, NU, NA, NU...SCOTTY... NU, NA, NU, NA...POP...

Pop and Scotty,
Thank you for your usual very insightful observations. I think your questions concerning the difference between capital gains and earned income points out the flaw and deficiency in the "Progressive" income tax. Once we permit anything "Progressive" to permeate our society, we invite the type of class warfare we have been witnessing. Let's get a fair, flat tax and return to the class free American society that made this country great.
Great Americans are class free while "Progressives" are classless!!!!!!!!!
POP: I believe that this inter-fighting among the candidates is business as usual when there are more than one vying for the position. After we are down to one candidate, everyone shakes hands and all is well again. Don't think that the Dems have not thought of all these things and now that we have the Super Pacs, it will not matter if what is being said is truthful. Only the OWS people would think that paying 15% on Capital Gains is not enough tax. Anyone who would gasp at this statement is ignorant of the tax law. the only thing I agree with is that Romney should not wait until September or even April to release his taxes, because if there is something the Dems can use to ruin him we should know now.
I'm off to the bar now, save me a seat.....
POP: Well, I am now getting notices that you have written your hub - a day late! What is going on with Hubpages?
Hi POP!
Wasn't prosperity what this nation was built on? Didn't' most of the wealthy people here work hard for it? If they came into money it was because they had relatives that founded this country and judging from the American history lessons I have been teaching they didn't walk into the land of milk and honey when they got here they had to work very, very hard for it, and some of them were slaves. Our founding fathers have to be rolling in their graves over this petty stupidity.
My husband works for a company that has actually prospered in this bad economic climate. They prospered because they didn't give up and worked harder than ever before. They had a record year last year. Any how I totally see your point and realize that this is politics, and there really are people out there who should remain nameless that need to work harder to gain the respect, and the value that they truly deserve. ::End of rant::
Great breakfast and I will definitely be popping into the inn later. I haven't had a drink since Christmas.
So true, Poppy...this is the downfall of the right...cannot stay on focus and cannot remain on message. Every Republican candidate on that stage should be going after Obama and his administration and this point and letting potential votes know how they would do it differenly rather than tearing each other to pieces personally...there's no future in that. When that process takes place and folks bow out the they look disingenious as they throw their support beind the nominee. At the present, the Republican candidates are allowing the media to set the tone and the direct of this primary...a bad, bad idea. The media should be reporting it...not creating it. WB
Little sister with Giant Brain and yum yum breakfast,
Glad you got it off your chest, little sister. I just did a whole thing on Romney over the phone so I won't go long winded here. You know, this tax return thing is just another part of the crap side of politics. Just business as usual. My boy is getting ready to go through yet some more stupid crap, this time from his ex-wife. Curious timing isn't it? I guess it's a good thing I'm not running for office because I would end up just kicking somebody's ass after I'd had enough. I'll see you at the Inn, let's do some pineapple gin shots!
Jim
BPOP - Breakfast at dinner time. I reckon I'll just mosey on over to the Inn. Well DUH, anyone who runs for the office of POTUS is a wealthy man. George Washington himself was worth $525 million with adjustments for time and inflation.
They need to knock off the BS and converge on the Liar-In-Chief. Good grief. I applaud Romeny for his business acumen. His taxes are paid under current tax law. Does that need to be reformed? Of course it does where everyone pays and I mean everyone.

The Fog
At least he paid taxes which is more than some can say. These idiots are just priming the pump for the Dems to start their attack on the winner. How stupid can they get?
What's up with our noble Republican challengers? They are handing the next election to Obummy by tearing each other down instead of focusing on the arrogant and leadership-less POTUS. Wake up, guys, before it's too late.
Pop, doesn't everyone want to have the money that Romney has? And then we begrudge those that have actually made the effort and succeeded! Hypocrisy at its apogee!
Hi Pop:
I'm glad the candidates are attacking each other. By the time the media gets done hashing and re hashing and re re hashing all the details, it will leave the ONE with very little with which to startle us.
I thought this was ridiculous too. Maybe they should all disclose whether they wear boxers or briefs. Makes just as much sense.

These Republicans are trying to kill each other off when the idea is to kill off the present administration. Killing the pipeline should be a big step to get the empty suit out of the white house, but the Repubs are worried about each others tax rate. How stupid! Romney's income is from investments which are taxed at aa lower rate if the investment is over a year old. If less than a year, regular tax rates apply. It seems that most of the folks who are running have been in congress and probably voted for those rates. Why can't we get some people to run who have some brains? See you all at the bar.
