Food Stamps For Sale!

Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Thursday, February 2, 2012. Our dear alien friend Scotty, the Observer, is in town. He has been looking into the Food Stamp Program and he has a few observations he would like to share.

Let's prepare Scotty's breakfast and get together at my place. This morning we will be baking Coconut Muffins. You will need 1 cup of shredded sweetened coconut, 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 large egg, 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup canola oil.

In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Set aside.

In a small bowl, combine egg, milk and oil. Add egg mixture to dry ingredients.

Stir mixture only until the dry ingredients are moistened. Add shredded coconut and expect the batter to be very lumpy. Don't panic, it's okay.

Spoon batter into lightly greased muffin tins and bake in a 375 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Wrap up the muffins and come on over. Scotty and I will be waiting with enough Irish Coffees for one and all.

Welcome, my dear earthling family. I have just learned that over the last three years the number of Americans on food stamps has gone sky high. Forty-six million of your citizens are on food stamps. This fact alone is rather astonishing. You are a rich nation, yet your people go hungry. In any case, what I find even stranger is the fact that your President Obama and his administration want even more people to receive food stamps.

The Obama administration is so determined to increase the number of people in the program that they are actually offering $75,000 grants to groups who develop "effective strategies" to increase program participation. This is counter productive and frankly kind of scary. Your President Obama wants more people than there are already to hold their hands out and ask for government assistance.

If you go to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's website you will notice that they single out Hispanics and the elderly as groups who often fail to sign up for food stamps. The official name of the program is SNAP which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This alien thinks it should be called DIG, standing for Dependency Is Good.

The site suggests that one of the key factors that stops people from participating is individual pride. Stamp that character trait out and voila...you have more and more people eager to let big government take care of them from cradle to grave.

Although I do not reside on your planet may I suggest to your President Obama that his goal should be to reduce the food stamp population and not grow it. Offering grants to people to get others to become more dependent is certainly not the American way. Encouraging independence and self reliance is...NA, NU, NA, NU...SCOTTY...NU, NA, NU, NA...POP...

Good morning Tom,

Soros is predicting violence in the streets shortly. Considering that he is behind the Occupy movement we should consider it a viable threat. See you at the Inn. Scotty is buying tonight.

Scotty is right. Obumma wants more people dependent on the federal government. That way, the socialists get to stay in power. Sickening. I am off to the bar. BARTENDER........

POP: This president and his views is so disgusting that I cannot process this in my little brain, so, I'm off to the bar to "digest" this idea. Save me a seat...

Good morning taxlarry,

Sickening doesn't even begin to describe this latest tactic to build dependency. See you at the bar. Scotty is paying with food stamps. He applied just to see if he would qualify and he did!

Good morning Pino,

Clearly, one way or the other Obama is determined to make us weak and dependent. Attacking the rich is just the beginning. Four more years and we are done for. See you at the inn. Scotty has been asking for you.

Rarely do I ever find myself at odds with the Great and Powerful POP, or the omnipresent Scotty, but this may be one program that may need to be left alone for a while, however only partially and the root cause really needs to be coupled with the foreclosure crisis and examined.

The base reason for the increase in both of these issues is simply unemployment and under-employment created by the “smart money” apprehension that began in the summer of 2008 and the subsequently instituted liberal progressive agendas that have wreaked havoc with the economy. The huge surge in food stamp recipients can surely be directly tied to the expiration of unemployment benefits, which for many ran out a year or longer ago

We all agree this is just the next step in the agenda towards their planned governmental dependency perhaps demonstrated as incontestable by comparing the increase in food stamp allotments as proportionally equivalent to unemployment numbers.

I find it intriguing that the media is continuing to report and perpetuate the falsehood that only people that couldn’t afford mortgages in the first place are being foreclosed upon And now they are propelling the insinuation that only an increasing number of “deadbeats” are collecting food stamps.

Nothing further could be from the truth, and while I’ll agree there are those where that condition exists, the lion share of those facing foreclosures and now collecting food stamps are simply the people, formerly solid, contributing, taxpaying members of the middle class, whom have lost not only their jobs, but careers and cannot replace them or replace livelihoods at their former income levels.

It really should be recognized that the new Obama plans for both food and the mortgage assistance are merely political ploy intended to buy votes in November at taxpayer expense.

LSWGB & Scotty,

Poor fools .. They don't see their ideology as socialism when, of course, that's exactly what it is. It seems that they think that if something isn't purely socialism that it isn't socialism at all. But capitalism without all four of of it's corners ceases to be capitalism, and when that happens we are just another European nation.

Up, awesome, groovy, far out, out a site, bitchin, fresh, and all that is cool!

Good afternoon ready,

It's great to see you at the table. I don't for a minute think that people should be denied help. In fact, the numbers are soaring for recipients, but to offer money to groups who can convince even more people to collect seems insane. Use that money to give people opportunity to improve their situation. See you at the Inn and we'll bounce this around some more.

Good afternoon Big Bro Who Gets It,

The goal of this government shouldn't be to rob people of their "pride" so that they will get on the food stamp program. Pride may be the only and best thing they have going for them. See you at the Inn. Scotty's buying.

BPOP - Got a little distracted this morning but that's okay because I'm allergic to coconut. Great information. I wrote a Hub once upon a time that pointed out that the Dept of Ag was spending tax dollars to promote people signing up for food stamps.

President Food Stamp needs to go. He wants all the people he can to be dependent on the federal government. It's in his grand plan. CYA

Dear Frog Prince,

I had no idea you wrote about this but I suppose you can't stress the stupidity that abounds enough. Your hub this morning was a topic I was planning to write about on Monday! We are definitely on the same page. See you later at the Inn.

I wrote about food stamps and their negative effects a year or two ago and understand what you are saying. Could be that those in SNAP will have their eating habits controlled more fully soon - and that sounds too much like North Korea, where Kim Jong Il allowed only 1 meal a day except to govt staff, the military and the like. And many people will use food stamps for Super Bowl food and have nothing left the rest of the month.

Worse for my psyche is a person I know that has hidden assets and goes to food banks several times a month for entertainment value, eating and being 150 lbs obese the hobby.

Even though I qualified for food stamps twice, I never applied - I did mystery shopping in grocery stores and that provided plenty of good food for a little work while I worked temporary jobs for 10 hours a day. However I did not have child care problems to interfere.

It's all a big problem.

breakfastpop profile image

breakfastpop Hub Author 3 months ago

Dear Patty,

Yes, it is all a big problem, but the government would have liked to take away your pride and will to lift yourself up by paying groups to convince you to go on the program. That makes no sense. We should aim to reduce the amount of people in the program not grow it. See you at the Inn.

What a shame, Poppy...back in my folks generation, people tried to have pride and they trying to better themselves in the process. Now the government wants them to trade their pride for a SNAP card and let the government do the rest. Look at our Oriental population in America...I have never seen any of them using food stamps. They have a lot of pride and they are very hard-working people. Every one of them who has come to America has made it a better place with the work ethic. I am all for helping people when they truly need it but I am not one to throw the warehouse doors open and pass out government cheese off of the shipping docks. Those who take no pride in themselves also do not vote. That fact might just surprise the socialist who occupies our White House at the present. Of course, he really could care less about the welfare of any of these people...it is all about breaking the financial back of America and disposing of the will that our forefathers knew that we would need to fight off such an onslaught to our freedom and liberty. If this man is re-elected, it will tell us much of the fabric of our country. The first time we can write off as an error of judgement...the second time around, everyone knows what they are getting. Our time is short. WB

Fortunately, I do not respond to commercials of any kind or sales pitches for food stamps. At age 5 yrs I decided that if someone had to be paid to sell something, it must not be any good. I don't know what made me do that, but I'll see you at the Inn and ignore the billboards on the way. lol

breakfastpop Hub Author 3 months ago

Good Morning Wayne,

I was thinking along the same lines as you. My grandparents came here with nothing. They would rather have died than accept aid. Instead they worked very hard raised a family and did rather well for themselves. That is the American way. By all means we have to help people who need it but suggesting that "individual pride" is a flaw is beyond repulsive.

This is a really new low, bp, the government offering honest taxpayers' money to groups to convince people to apply for more government aid (taxpayers' money). That program sounds like something out of 'Alice in Wonderland.'

breakfastpop profile image

breakfastpop Hub Author 3 months ago

Dear drbj,

It is more like something from Grimm's Fairy Tales.... Rob people of their "individual pride" and you have them dependent for the rest of their lives. Shameful. See you at the Inn.
