Croissant French Toast and the Observer

Huh?

Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Thursday, December 8, 2011 and our alien friend Scotty, the Observer, has had an encounter with one of those billionaires your President Obama keeps talking about and bashing. He wants to tell us all about it and he also wants breakfast. This morning Scotty is craving Croissant French Toast having enjoyed some on a recent trip to Paris. You will need 4 croissants that you must cut in half lengthwise, 2/3 cup lowfat milk, 3 large lightly beaten eggs, 1/3 cup orange juice, 2 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 teaspoon grated orange peel, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg.

Melt butter in a skillet over med-high heat. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients except the croissants. Blend well.

Dip the croissants in the mixture and make sure they are completely coated. Place in frying pan and cook until deliciously golden brown. Wrap them up and hurry over to my house. I will supply the syrup and butter and there will be plenty of Mimosas for one and all.

Hello, my most cherished, earthling friends. On my travels this week I had the pleasure of meeting with T. Boone Pickens. Mr. Pickens, as I am sure you all know, is a fabulously wealthy billionaire who acquired most of his wealth from the oil and gas industries. He graciously afforded me some time with him to chat about the current state of affairs in America.

I asked him how he felt about President Obama's constant attack on the evil corporations and the greedy millionaires and billionaires. Mr. Pickens told me that he was utterly confused by President Obama's constant use of the term "fair share" when it comes to discussing taxes and the wealthy. When he was 70 years old he forked over $665 million dollars in taxes. Is that not fair? In fact, what is fair? Mr. Pickens doesn't understand your president anymore than this alien does.

Mr. Pickens went on to discuss the oil and gas industry and the president's apparent antagonism towards them. If President Obama really wanted industry to develop jobs and new technologies then Mr. Pickens and I agree that he should be applauding them. Of course we know that applause is not on the agenda. Another thing that is not on the agenda is an all out effort to make your nation energy independent. It could be accomplished, but you know what they say. If there is a will, there is a way. Sadly, there is no will on the part of this administration and your nation, under this president, has clearly lost its way. NA, NU, NA, NU...SCOTTY...NU, NA, NU, NA...POP...

Good morning Tom,

President Obama is fighting tooth and nail to keep us dependent in every sense of the word. See you at the Inn Tom.

POP: Now that's one billionaire who understands obama. Most of the rest take the bashing and then attend fundraisers with their wallet open. We have so many opportunities to become energy independent, and Obama just tables them until after the 2012 election.

As for Scotty, I didn't know where he was, but I see that he came back with a tan - at least that is his explanation for a slight blue tint to his skin.

See you at the bar - save me a seat.....

Good morning Pino,

Thanks for explaining Scotty's blue tint. I thought he was freezing. In any case, I think the billionaires and millionaires and CEOs should start speaking up and educating Obama and the public about the realities of job creation . I heard this morning that many of them said under the present conditions they would not be able to build the companies they have today. There are just too many regulations. See you at the Inn. I'll save you a seat. I noticed that you and Professor Stopthebull got along quite nicely last night.

Good morning. Mimosas and french toast. - yum!!!!

I was listening to the rest of that interview and when Mr. Pickens explained how much he paid in taxes and asked was that considered fair or enough, the interviewer said it depended on how much he made if that was a fair amount or not. And it was implied that if he'd tell them how much he'd made, they would determine if it was fair. I shouldn't have been flabbergasted, but what I was!!

Good morning Lynn,

If this kind of thinking escalates our nation will be filled with lazy slackers. If you take away the incentive to succeed by punishing those who work hard you are lost. That's what is happening and we all ought to be very, very scared. See you at the Inn where we are still free to work hard and reap the rewards of our labors.

A common mistake of C-grade high school English students is mixing up "then" and "than" in sentence structure. In the last paragraph of your "blog" you should have written "then" instead of "than" where you have "than Mr. Pickens and I agree..." I know that you will explain this away as a "typo"; you seem to have mastered explaining away.

Pop, great hub, I didn't get to see or hear the interview that you are referring to, I'd like to get audio feed of such things, so I could listen to them while I work canning and packaging for the freezer and running the dehydrator. I did get an antenna up and get a few local stations but can't seem to bring myself to watch more than the weather, as little else really effects or interests me.

The issue on energy is mute as long as the cost of a new car with something green under the hood is out of reach for the common worker and the common unemployed worker especially the ones who lost jobs and homes and cars etc. Their credit scores destroyed in the process. The gates should be opened on all current fuels to power the nation back to prosperity, then[or is it than]as a nation we can adjust to something new. As for how much a man makes, is nobodies business as long as they met the current tax code, as best I can tell they are good to go. It's the tax dodgers that often hold senate seats that they need to go after, the affluent who aren't paying at all, seems the bunch surfaced while being vetted to an appointment to an office under Obama, 'nuff said, I'll see you at the Inn,50

PS you need a dung fly, fly swatter.....

Obama tosses around the term, "fair share" all the time, but never defines what he means by that. Over half of all Americans no longer pay any income tax at all, so what's their 'fair share'?

Nothing?

What's 'fair' about that? We all live here, and we all benefit, so shouldn't we all at least pay something?

It is interesting that when one doesn't know facts or refuses to have an open mind that the only thing one has left is to sling insults. GADFLY I'M TALKING TO YOU. It is a sign of an ignorant, immature person who does not have the skills necessary to engage in discourse, courteous discourse, democracy at its best, who would resort to an unenlightened comment such as the one you left here.

POP, bravo for another interesting hub and for making all viewpoints and opinions welcome here, not just the ones you may personally espouse. You are nothing if not courteous, gracious and open minded to other views.

So GADFLY, disagree with POP's analysis, challenge her, question her, but just know that you discredit yourself by being downright rude and resorting to playground bullying.

I can see it is time I get my head out of the Christmas batter and start watching the news. What would this country do if we were chucked back into the pioneer days? See ya at the inn! Another great hub! (P.S. Sorry you haven't seen me much, but I am still enjoying your hubs!)

Actually Gadfly I was an A student and continued to do so in college. I was just wondering if you born rude and insulting or did you develop the technique through the years. You have it perfected.

My life has been so busy lately that I am a day late but I really want you to know I like this hub. Mr. Pickens is a smart man and Obama will never allow that pipe line if he is re-elected. I wish the Republicans could push it through. It is always good to hear from Scotty.

Good morning 50

Thanks for the advice. I ran right out and bought a dung swatter and then I called the exterminator just to be on the safe side. I hate bugs. I just heard that Obama's favorite green car has problems. It has a tendency to explode. Your point is well taken. By the time the EPA gets through enacting all these green regulations, cars will be completely unaffordable.

Good morning Will,

There is nothing fair about half the population paying all the taxes for the other half. They should kick in their fair share and then (not than) let's see how it shakes out.

Dear jellio,

Thank you for taking on Gadfly and defending me in such an eloquent way. I do welcome all opinions at the breakfast table and I always will. I do not welcome sarcastic mean spirited diners because they spoil the vibe.

Dear Pamela,

This is an incredibly busy time of year. Thanks for coming to breakfast. Your lovely presence is always appreciated. That pipeline would create tons of jobs, but this president only talks about jobs. He is not all that interested in actually creating them.

Good morning tipoague,

Just knowing you pop in now and then is enough for me. If I were you I would keep my head in the batter. It's safer there.

Good morning breakfast pop. The recepie sounds wonderful if not a bit basic. As to the topic at hand, my feeling is that the wealthy should not be made to pay my share of anything, just their own. Business in America has becomethe ultimate game of "he/she who dies with the most toys wins". Business has long had the breaks, the advantages and recently the abilities to move itself offshore completely to avoid taxes altogether while paying wages to foreign workers at levels that preclude those workers from ever obtaining the power to purchace those things they help manufacture. There is the free market system and then there is a thing called decency! Tax loopholes, lobbying towards self-aggrandizement, and recently the attempts in my home state of PA by the natural gas industry to obtain the power to decide what laws can and cannot be passed in the state congress are just a few of the examples of greed and avarice that now pass as business as usual. Is it iny wonder that the bulk of the country feels disenfranchised by its government and the wealthy. If you build a better mousetrap and become fabulously wealthy for it fine, God bless you. But don't sit back and say that you owe nothing to the general coffers or your fellow citizens. If your mansion catches fire it is the tax dollars that will pay the fire company to come and douse it. Should we say that if you pay as little as you can in taxes we will solve your burning house problem proportionately? Spray just a gallon or so of water on the house? The tax code is complicated and in need of repair but citizenship requires an honest and dedicated approach. God is watching and He is, in the long run, not amused.

breakfastpop Hub Author 5 months ago

Dear Richard,

Th notion that corporations don't pay their fair share is a bit exaggerated. The tax laws need to be reformed no doubt. I believe that the 50 percent of Americans who pay nothing should join in on the fun. Corporations do pay taxes and if the laws were fairer they wouldn't move off shore. They would bring their profits back home if they wouldn't be punished so severely. This is exactly what Obama doesn't get. It's just like my recipe, very basic. Keep in mind that there are loads of small business people in mostly cash businesses, who don't report their true earnings. I agree that citizenship requires an honest approach but honestly it doesn't come that easily.
