Nutmeg Muffins and a Shark Attack
68Capitalism On Trial
Good morning breakfastpoppers. Today is Monday, January 16, 2012. The Republican candidates are circling the waters and holding one of their own in their sights. Mitt Romney is under attack from Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry for his success while serving in the private sector. You would think they would be better off concentrating on unseating President Obama, but it looks like they prefer to put Romney and capitalism on trial. Let's prepare some Nutmeg Muffins for breakfast this morning and take a look at this latest bit of lunacy.
You will need 3 cups of all purpose flour, 1 and 1/2 cups brown sugar, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/4 cup butter, 2 large beaten eggs, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Prepare 2 dozen muffin cups with cooking spray. Mix 2 cups of flour and brown sugar in a large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Set aside 3/4 cup of this mixture for use later as a topping.
Add remaining cup of flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt to the flour and brown sugar mixture. Mix well.
Add buttermilk and eggs and stir until moistened.
Place batter in muffin cups and top each muffin with 1/2 teaspoon of the flour and brown sugar mixture. Bake for 20 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center of muffin comes out clean. Mix yourself an Irish Coffee and try to relax. I feel a letter coming on.
To the Republican Candidates for the Presidency:
Gentlemen, have you all lost your collective minds? Did you somehow forget that your goal, ultimately, is to take back the White House and save this nation? Are you trying to win the nomination or are you trying to make sure President Obama gets 4 more years? I ask these questions because you are behaving like sharks going in for the kill. The more you attack each other the more the electorate gets turned off. This latest fiasco proves the point I am trying to make. Mr. Gingrich, I wonder exactly what you had in mind when you went after fellow Republican Mitt Romney trying to destroy him in the public's eye. Mr. Perry, you also went in on this attack and, in my view, you both emerged looking like you were ready to join the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Mitt Romney is under attack for the years he spent away from politics. His years at Bain Capital were immensely successful. He bought companies, sold companies, let people go, shored up business and hired people back and in the end he succeeded. It's called free enterprise gentlemen. He has successes and he had failures and that is real life. Your attacks upon his track record jive very nicely with those that want to see class warfare erupt on our streets. Your attacks remind me of the way the unions do business. They want to be guaranteed jobs and benefits for life and to hell with the realities of balancing the books or a budget.
You either believe in free enterprise or you do not. You either accept the inherent risks in business or you prefer having your shots called by big government. What is it you people believe in?
The president went on television the other day to talk about streamlining the government. He spoke of his plans to combine departments and end duplication. He may not realize what he is talking about but you should and so should the public. In order to make for a leaner more responsive government, people are going to lose their jobs. That is reality.
I respectfully suggest that you get back on track and start behaving like candidates who really want to make a difference. Mitt Romney and capitalism aren't the problem. President Obama is the problem, so I suggest you focus on him instead of one of your own. If you are going through an identity crisis, take a good hard look in the mirror and remember what you came to do. Stop working for President Obama and start working for those of us who believe our nation has to be saved from the great abyss. Time is of the essence and the clock is ticking.
Respectfully yours,
Breakfastpop

I think I should have said shooting their nose off to spite their face.
A great letter! A must read for the candidates as it tells it like it is. I am off to the bar. BARTENDER...........
Pop,
Hear, hear!!!!! Gov. Perry sounds like he is still a Democrat with the tone of his attacks and I'm afraid "new" Newt is every bit as juvenile as "old" Newt.
POP: From what I understand, Mitt Romney threw the first mud at Newt Gingrigh, with his attack ads in Iowa. These ads were filled with inaccuracies, and Newt asked Mitt to at least tell the truth. When he said he did not have any control over the ads, and he would not ask his super pac to stop, Newt had to make a choice. Before that time, Newt was not running an attack campaign. Two things have happened. The Super Pacs have changed campaigning in America forever, as the truth doesn't matter, and Americans are too lazy to check the facts. Newt was forced to attack back, and I believe that it got way out of hand. I don't like the fact that the other Reps are feeding the Dems. The good thing is that after the primary in SC, if Mitt wins, it is all over.
Well, I'm off to the bar. I have a birthday cake for someone. Save me a seat.....
Yep the circular firing squad continues, wonder if we'll see any Dems peeing on the bodies in September. Speaking of which after I take a quick break I'm heading to the Bar to reload see ya there, I'm saving seats..
While I don't agree with you completely, I do see that you make great sense when it comes to the political tactics. Be it democrat or republican, when you go after your own, you open up the box and when you are ready to seal it, the stuff never fits back in.
POP: I am having a hard time as well. I have a primary to vote in by the end of the month. Early voting started today, but I cannot go without a decision on a candidate.
Oh, Well, off to the bar,.....
Pop, this is loss in motion, the GOP is taking eyes off the ball and the ball is stacking bricks to set in motion that sights like this and others considered socializing sights will be monitored by Socialist just the breed that wants your head.
I believe they set obama for four more years and we be screwwed, I'm bar bound with a thirst 50
btw 6 days no notification
BPOP - Gingrich reminds me of Elmer Fudd and always has. As it turns out, Gingrich has also been involved with a venture firm. Chris Matthews tried to pin out the head of one of Gingrich's Super PAC advertisers yesterday on Fox and the worm squirmed away. Gingrich has yet to see the baggage that will be unloaded on his dumb ass.
He's also the one who, if my memory serves me correctly in the first few debates they had, who said he wasn't going to be an attack dog. Now, we see what Elmer is capable of. It's stupidity.
Perry needs to come on home to Texas and reverse his immigration issue stances and take a few deep breaths.
The problem is Obama and his disdain for capitalism. This whole thing needs to be put in perspective and stop acting like rabid dogs.
The Frog
Brilliantly stated Pop. I too get really tired of the infighting. It has to be about the issues. The REAL issues.
Newt surprised me a bit, I must say. I think he's a pretty smart guy, so his latest stunt troubles me in a confusing way. It doesn't make sense. And exactly as you stated, his actions are in OFFENSE to capitalistic principle.
You touched on something else as well which I think is so relevant in today's collective psyche which seems very rampant—that we are all entitled to jobs. And what's worse, that those jobs we have are the end all to be all, and without them we can't make it. It goes into a few points I've been making in several past hubs about self-reliance, freedom to choose, and being prepared in life. In the end losing a job sucks, but if you've come to a point in your life where you've worked a considerable amount of time and now that the job is no more, you find yourself in such dire straits as to claim it's the end of the road, something is wrong. You have not planned. You have allowed yourself to be a victim. You have built your life around something intangible. And that's a dangerous path.
What's that old tale about the squirrel who stores his nuts?
That is a pertinent article today, Pop. The GOP hopefuls certainly do not look good while attacking one of their own, and on empty premises to boot. I've stopped watching the political news, debates, mud pie throwing and all the rest.
Thanks for the article - rated Up.
Bravo Poppy...nicely done. We are guaranteed nothing more than our next paycheck that we have earned. The best insulation against losing one's job is to work and produce in such a manner that those within the decision-making side of the company feel that they cannot go on without you. We reaffirm our value to the system every day that we show up to do our jobs. I agree that this attempt to shave votes off of Romney is bad business all the way around and none will win anything in the end by doing it...they will simply provide fodder for the upcoming campaign. If conservatives cannot get past petty differences and form a solid movement behind the nominee, then we are most certainly in trouble and Obama likely has his election won. I for one do not want to see that happen in 2012. WB
Man the more I get into this political season the more I realize there is little hope for this nation without a third party. It has come down to the republicans would vote for a dog turd to get the White House back after they a abused it for eight years. And then they field candidates that ensure us of four more years of nothing getting done. I think we need to find an honest man, there must be one out there and run him as an independent. I think we should take power away from both parties for about 16yrs. While both parties are sitting out, the electoral process should be revamped taking the big money out of the process. I want to vote for ideas and ideals not for the candidate of the highest bidder. I also think we need to administer IQ test nothing discrimintory jsut the ability to score above 90. During that 16yr period we should cleans Wshington of lobbyists. I don't want to go on but I would like to hear some innovative reasons for running for president with more originality than wanting to limit the competition to one term. Hell that goes without saying but this year that is all they are saying. There is no demand for innovative ideas to save this nation{ only save the reputation of our leading candidate. This seems to be the season to strengthen the independent party.
The dems are no doubt watching the debates and laughing their butts off. The candidates are doing all the research, digging all the dirt, and handing it to them on a platter. All they have to do is watch the debates and they have all the ammo they need for a great smear campaign against the winner. I can't hardly stand to even watch them in action anymore.
I agree with you that the candidates should be addressing the concerns of the people and their plans and solutions. Is there anyone really worth voting for that is currently in the running? Just a thought.
With everyone focus on the mud slinging, it makes me wonder what is being pass before our eyes. This calls for more drinks. See ya at the inn!
Little Sister With Giant Brain,
I don't know. It's just my opinion now, but I think that Mr. Romney played a very underhanded game in Iowa. His super packs spent $6 million dollars in just a few days on extremely negative ads against Gingrich, stating information that was absolutely incorrect about Newt's record. Romney openly admits it, but claims no responsibility, and comes off like he's squeaky clean, and can't do anything about those nasty old super packs that are supporting him. Trust me, those packs will not run anything that the candidate does not approve of. Newt's pissed. I don't think it's the smartest thing to do counterattacking as strongly as he started out doing, but I do understand his anger. Romney needs to accept responsibility for those ads, and say "No More". Newt ran a very clean campaign until he became the victim of some not just dirty, but factually wrong campaigning. That's just my opinion. You're the one with the brains sis. I'm just the piano player in a whorehouse don't forget. (laughing)

Outstanding hub. It would seem that the Republicans are doing Obama's work for him as I'm sure we will hear many of these words quoted when the campaign between Obama and the elected Republican candidate begins. They seem to be assuring Obama's re-election. Very sad indeed.
bp - The first candidate to stop slinging mud who offers some ideas, innovations and potential plans for emerging from the Obummy mess our nation is in - that's the man I will vote for. Is that person running???
Awwww .. You're talking about me aren't you? I'm glad that my sister recognizes my talents!

Pop the SC primary will be this week and I have never seen so much mud slinging especially by Ron Paul. Looks like the candidates are shooting their feet off to spite their face and without a doubt Obama and the Dems are eating this up and couldn't be happier.
