Old Fashioned Oatmeal on Common Sense Monday

Get Smart

Good morning breakfastpoppers, Today is Monday, August 31, 2009. I have designated Monday as Common Sense Monday. Washington has come a long way from applying the principle of common sense to the work they were sent to do. If actions speak louder than words then they have failed miserably on both accounts.

Let's begin this day with a hearty, healthy common sense meal. If you care to join me you will need 2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal, 1 cup low-fat milk, 2 medium apples that have been cored, peeled and diced, 1/2 cup of crushed walnuts, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cook oatmeal according to package directions. Stir in apples, 3/4 cup of the nuts, cinnamon and maple syrup. Pour oatmeal into 4 bowls and top with milk and remaining walnuts. Sit back and enjoy a simple, stick to your ribs breakfast that makes sense.

...POP...Speaking of "making sense", I find very little news coming out of Washington that bears any resemblance what-so-ever to the basic principles of logic and common sense. Consider the whole issue of health care reform. The nation is in an uproar. People are understandably worried about the direction Congress and the President are moving in. Despite loud and clear proof of our unhappiness, those we put in office are moving ahead with plans to plow this bill through. They have turned a deaf ear to our concerns. Now we have to ask, why? Common sense dictates that we put these people in Washington to represent us. Common sense dictates that they listen very carefully to what we have to say and that they bend to our will. Why? Because they work for us. It's really that simple. We did not send them to Washington to turn their backs on us and treat us like deranged errant children, just because we don't agree with them.

Common sense tells me that there should be an evaluation of their work ethic and their job performance right about now. If they fail to achieve a high enough score than they should be placed on probation. The message in this is that you were sent to Washington to represent us and now you have to do a much better job in that area, or...POP...out you go! That's the kind of thing that occurs in the real world and it is high time Congress and the President were subjected to it as well.

Along these lines, if the President can deliver a "State of the Union" address, it makes perfect sense for the people to deliver a "State of the Presidency" address. After all, we are the recipients or, should I say, the victims of the state of the union. To determine how things are going in this nation, it's only common sense to ask us, the people. We'll tell it like it is. We are out in the trenches, not living in the rarefied world of D.C.

Speaking of common sense. How does it make sense to launch an investigation of the C.I.A.? Clearly, it fails every major test in that area, so why are we doing it.? We are doing it for political reasons. We are doing it to divert attention away from the failure of this administration. An investigation of this nature will embarrass our country, destroy the C.I.A. and place all of us in danger. It is impossible for me to believe that the President doesn't know this, but yet he insists upon putting on an act that no one is buying. Suddenly, this man, who would be king, can't stop the Attorney General from revealing the inner workings of an organization that has done a magnificent job of keeping our nation safe. Once again, a splendid and frightening example of "the death of common sense."

Sadly, proof of the demise of "common sense" is all around us. I have no doubt, that by next Monday, we will have many other outlandish examples to discuss. In the meantime, let's eat our oatmeal and take comfort in the knowledge that at some point these yo-yos have to run for re-election.

We'll be waiting....

Great hub--the oatmeal sounds like a fantastic start to a Monday! The "state of the presidency" is being reflected in his dropping poll numbers. Health care is going to make or break him; I have a feeling it will be the latter. My 'hope' for this country will be that the Obama administration is held to only one term.

Dear americhick,

Welcome to my hub! You're right the oatmeal is delicious and so is the thought of a one term president.

Dearest POP,

The problem is that common sense does not exist in Washington. If it did, we wouldn't be in the mess that we are now in. The same clowns get elected year after year. Look at Ted Kennedy - he is praised for being "one of the greatest senators of our time". The only real "achievement" in his life was the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.

taxlarry 2 years ago

Common sense was dying last year, and it expired last November 4th. Lots of "yo-yos" who thought they were so smart elected Obumma president because they wanted "change." Unfortunately, they were not listening to his rhetoric. They heard it, but didn't listen, they did not comprehend. They did not comprehend he is a socialist, he stayed in a church for 20 years with a pastor who hated this country and hated white people, he was friends with admitted communists (one of his czars) and all kinds of despicable people and organizations, particularly those from Chicago. His left wing stances coupled with the left wing libs in Congress (Pelosi, Rangle, Frank, Waxman, Schumer, Dodd, etc, etc, etc)are a blueprint for the demise of our country as we know it, or knew it. It seems, though, that a lot of young people who voted for Obumma are not happy with ObummaCare. A change of heart? Maybe. A big problem is that people like the libs don't care what anyone thinks. Congressman Pallone of NJ doesn't care that people at his town hall meetings were against the health care bill because he is going to get it passed! That is happening a lot where elected officials don't care what people want. They only care what they themselves want. They, as memebers of Congress, will always have the best health care. They don't care what we, the loyal tax-paying citizens want. As for investigating the CIA, Obumma should be impeached. The CIA has kept us safe since the 2001 attacks. I took from the campaign that Obumma would weaken our national security and he is doing it. If the CIA investigation continues, how many people would join that organization? We will be more vulnerable. It's too bad we can't get these morons out before elections. I don't think the country can wait. There should be a recall of most members of Congress. They have been there way too long. And I haven't gotten to all the tax cheats in Congress and the Obumma administration. Too much.....BARTENDER...........

Dear nobhlpc,

I can dream can't I? As far as Kennedy is concerned, his popularity lies in the fact that he was a "good old boy" hard drinking, womanizing coward, who the idiots in Washington and in his state just adored. Kind of reminds me of the O.J. jury. The nullification of "common sense".

Der taxlarry,

I suppose that is my point. Without common sense you've got nothing. Examples of the death of common sense are everywhere. It's sad, really sad.

Hmmm....maybe we can elect Common Sense again sometime to send to Washington. Yeah he and Liberty--that would be a good ticket.

Now to take time to look at some of your ads, Breakfastpop!

Dear Pamela,

Washington is fresh out of common sense. If you can package it up, ship it to Congress. When you referred to my ads, did you mean Ad Sense? I haven't signed up for anything. Should I?

Pino Krisio 2 years ago

POP: Common Sense? You need to leave it at the city border when you are elected to Washington D.C.

What I would like to see is an annual ballot of our elected officials to let them know where they stand with their constituents. That'll never happen, because it would be too expensive. The mid-term elections are in 2010, and let's see how the Congressmen up for elections change their tune. We must vote any incumbent out of office.

Our presidnet is a very elequent speaker, and I believe that most voters were not listening to what he was saying when he was campaigning.

Everyone's back this week. I cannot wait to see what happens. POP, you should have enough material for a lifetime.

I'm on my way - save me a seat at the bar.

Dear Pino Krisio,

You are right. How about mid-term report cards. Mmm. Gives me an idea. In any case, President Teleprompter knows how to read eloquently which is a far cry from being an eloquent speaker.

I'll save you a seat. We have a lot to discuss.

I refuse to eat oatmeal and you can't make me!

Washington say's "I refuse to use common sense and you can't make me!"

Texan say's "Wrong! We can and we will!"

Great hub POP!

Dear Texan,

Okay, no oatmeal for you! As to common sense for Washington..we are going to give it our best shot. Thanks Texan.

Piino Krisio 2 years ago

POP: I bet if we set up a table outside the supermarket and asked everyone to go and give your congressmen a grade, A to F like on a report card, I think Congress would be shocked! I'd even bring my own table!

POP - You're correct - Obama has a great speach writer. I stand corrected.

Note to A Texan: Aren't you ceceding from the United States?

Dear Pino Krisio,

Interesting idea. Kind of like the girl scouts selling cookies. Do we need to fear the thought police or the Black panthers hauling our behinds away?

Pino Krisio 2 years ago

POP: No, but stay away from the czars. They are double agents.

Seceding? No I have not planned on that, but I don't speak for all Texans...or do I

Very sensible, or common sense hub.

There is some weird crap going coming out of Washington.

Why are these idiots trying to sell the health reform bill to us. They do almost nothing to show us what is good about it. Everything we see of it is just the opposite. Some even say this could be Obama's (and even the Democrates) Waterloo if it passes. So why does the idiot McCain want to get involved in it?

And the CIA and the military. Non of these guys like Obama. This is why Obama is after his own army. The army of the people off the street like the SUEI, the Black Panthers, etc. He knows he can't count on the military to back him.

Thanks for the sense

Keep on Hubbing!

Dear eovery,

Obama and his gag of socialist czars and supporters are after much bigger game. They want to change and transform our country from a Democratic Republic into a socialist state. Make no mistake about it, that's what all this "change" is all about.

You are a highly intelligent person. I like you idea for a state of the presidency address by we the people. As far as the CIA investigation, even my husband (who is not much involved in politics) was SCREAMING at the tv wondering why we are investigating possible abuses of TERRORISTS. Do the idiots in charge of this administration actually believe this is going to change anyone's opinion of the USA. It makes us all look like a group of fools turning on the very guard dogs that keep us safe!!!

Common sense, John Conyer congressman from Michigan said Congress will only have two days to read the bill, also it would be hard to cipher even with the help of two lawyers.

Common sense, he will vote for it!

1018 pages, maybe not if there were more than 25 double spaced line per page. Add to that wide margins you get about 6 words per line, the whole thing could fit in 400 pages. I thought those Libs were tree huggers and look at the paper they waste on this bill..

Despite the fact that the Texan doesn't like oatmeal, I for one will be making this fabulous breakfast on the first frosty morning this fall. Pop, you know how strongly I feel about all of these ignorant and dangerous politicians and what they have in store for us, so as I told you earlier, I am going out there on September 12th to make my voice heard. I hope that your fans and fellow bloggers will do the same because it is the best way for us to get out our message. Our senators, congressmen, governors, and Nobama

may not want to hear what we say, but they won't be able to deny our presence.

francine19 2 years ago

Dear SheriSapp,

I have to tell you, that when I watch TV or read the newspaper these days, the veins stick out on my neck. I just canceled my subscription to the New York Times because sometimes while reading it, I thought it was a paper published in Iraq or Afghanistan. Hardly ever did you see a photo that showed our troops' compassion or bravery...always the photo showed our troops in an unfavorable light. I'm sick of this message that the current administration is sending out to the world that we are sorry for protecting ourselves, that our CIA is criminal in trying to pry information from real criminals who are out to destroy the "infidel". What is wrong with these idiots who are trying to support the rights of terrorists? They chopped off Daniel Pearl's head for nothing but being a journalist. They sent 3000 hard-working people to their deaths, and for this we want to punish our CIA interrogators for doing a great job. What is wrong with this picture? Taxlarry, get me a bottle!

Dear francine19,

I wonder how the liberal biased media will cover the event. Perhaps they won't cover it at all. I can't imagine the NY Times having a picture of the outrage in DC on page one. They usually save that honor for an injured terrorist. March on!

Dear jiberish,

Okay, no oatmeal. How about a Mimosa? As far as common sense is concerned, you have it in spades.
